Village Rice Barn
(28S-EDO-101)
EDO-101 Village Rice Barn, this is a “28Standard” 4Ground model with high detail and pre-painted parts.
Shogunate Japan was divided into ‘Han’ (feudal domains) these domains were ‘Daimyoden’ (large private land territories) from which a feudal lord got his title, ‘Daimyo’ and his income.
This is a lowland (Bei no Naya) rice barn, all ‘Mura’ (villages) had a ‘Taka’ (estimated field tax burden) that they had to pay their ‘Daimyo’. ‘Tata’ was calculated in multiples of ‘Koku’ (the rice needed to feed one man for one year), These taxes were paid in produce and stored in this sort of barn before being sent to the local castle town.
Each ‘Daimyo’ needed a large income raised as taxes from within his domain for his own expenses and to support his ‘Buke-Jo’ (castle dwelling martial retinue) and his lesser ‘Goshi’ (Country Samurai).
Though rice was grown in every village in all domains it was never meant to be eaten by ‘Mura no Heimin’ (village common folk) other than on a few holly days or unless issued as rations when they were in the service of their feudal master as ‘Ashigaru’ (levy soldiers). Almost all the rice harvested by a village went towards the village taxes, this rice tax was collected and stored in village rice barns/large outbuildings called ‘Mura Bei no Naya’.
