The United Arab Republic, being organised on Soviet lines, carried things further, concentrating whole artillery brigades to maximise its effect.
Most of the artillery was old Second World War surplus (even if it got a new name). The 122mm M-30 was the old Soviet 1938 model, while the Ordnance Quick Firing 25 pdr guns were left over from the days of British occupation. Some divisions had the Soviet 152mm D-1, a renamed WWII-era 152mm 1943 model. Despite their age, these still out-ranged the Israeli artillery, as well as throwing heavier shells. Other battalions had the more modern French 155 mm Modèle 50, a leftover from the days before the United Arab Republic when France still had an interest in the Suez Canal.
Observer teams need a good view of the battlefield in order to do their job correctly. Be sure to deploy them in a position where they have an excellent view of the battlefield such as on a hilltop or on the top floor of a multi-level building.
Staff Teams
To do their job, a staff team needs lots of maps, plotting boards, charts and tables, not to mention radios and telephones. All this equipment prevents them from being very mobile or effective in combat.
Although they are an Infantry team, Staff teams are part of their Artillery platoon and move slowly as if they were a Heavy Gun team. A Staff team can shoot as a Rifle team, but cannot function as a Staff team in the turn it does so.
A Staff team can function just as well when it is mounted in its own Transport team as it can when Dismounted (as long as it is not Bailed Out or Bogged Down), but cannot function at all when mounted in another Transport team.
The Artillery HQ & Crew blister pack contains enough gun crew figures (five crew figures per gun) for six 122mm M-30 howitzers, six OQF 25 pdr guns, six 152mm D-1 howitzers or six M50 155mm howitzers.
Artillery HQ & Crew blister pack contains only the figures and bases for the Command Rifle team, Observer Rifle team, Staff team, and the Gun Crew figures themselves. The 122mm M-30 howitzer, OQF 25 pdr gun, 152mm D-1 howitzer and M50 155mm howitzers need to be purchased seperately.
