Medieval `Hand-an-arf´

Medieval `Hand-an-arf´
(OBKH)

This ‘oak-blade’ replica represents a sword known as a Late Medieval and Tudor ‘Hand-an-arf’ (hand and a half). By the C15 plate armour was better fitting and protective, the use of a shield to glance blows was no longer necessary.  Knights fought more and more often on foot in the center of an army. With no reins for the horse and no shield, both hands could be used to fight with.
