An iconic dwelling of the Roman world, villas such as this would be found atop the better class of Roman hills or scattered around the countryside.
Often luxurious and maintained by Rome's elite, villas were categorised by Pliny the Elder as either the villa urbana or the villa rustica. The later stood in splendid isolation surrounded by lush rolling fields, the former packed into a bustling cityscape.
