T-34 Track Variants
(SU059)
Initially when the T-34 first went into production in 1940 the road wheels of its tracks were of the dished type, basically flat with a central hub surrounded by bolts. But in 1942 the Soviet supplies of Rubber were running low and it was decided to start fitting all steel spoked road wheels to T-34s.
The unfortunate drawback of the all steel road wheels was the disturbing harmonic noise generated by the steel on steel, making an uncomfortable ride for the crews. As supplies of rubber became available from the US through the lend-lease program rubber rimmed road wheels once more became available. At first only leading and trailing road wheels were fitted with rubber rims, but as more wheels become available crews would replace their steel rimed wheels when ever the opportunity presented itself. Once more the dished wheel became available and a new spoked rubber rimmed wheel was also introduced.
A common sight on T-34s is a mix of the Spoked wheels, both rubber rimmed and all steel.
