T-34 obr 1942 / OT-34
(SU053)
Pack Contents
Like the T-34 obr 1942s in the box set, the individual blisters also come with the parts require to make several variants. Included is the Flame nozzle for the OT-34, which replaces the hull machine-gun.
Also included are both types of external fuel tank, two 40-litre boxes for mounting on the rear or drum tanks for mounting on the sides. The cupola can be added to late production tanks from the second half of 1943.
In 1942 a program for improving the T-34 was started and one of its products was a new improved turret. The new hexagonal turret was a little larger and more spacious, but still only allowed for 2 crew inside the turret, the gunner and the commander.
It had two rounded hatches instead of the previous large single hatch. The increased size allowed ammunition storage to rise from 77 to 100 rounds of 76.2mm ammunition.
The turret was also built with an air ventilator mounted on the roof, with the tank itself receiving the improved "Cyclone" air filter.
A 5-speed gearbox, and external fuel tanks, were added. Firstly the 40 litre rear mounted box type, but in late 1943 with cylindrical drum tanks (up to four tanks, one of them always filled with oil, the rest were filled with fuel).
In summer 1943, the "Krasnoye Sormovo" factory had developed the new cast commander’s cupola and began to mount it on T-34 obr 1942 turrets.
T-34 obr 1942 was produced until mid-1944. Then it was replaced with its upgunned variant - the T-34/85.
In Flames of War
Backing up your force with some T-34s is a great idea, they are both cheap and effective. Armed with a good gun capable of both anti-tank and anti-infantry work (Range: 32”/80cm, AT: 9, FP 3+), well armoured (F6, S5, T1) and highly mobile (Wide Tracks and Fast Tank), no wonder they have been labelled the best tank of the war by many commentators.
You can also use this model to create a Flame-tank Company, having up to 10 OT-34s to take out enemy strong points.
