Two vessels filled the Kriegsmarine's light cruiser Leipzig-class, the Leipzig and Nu¨rnberg, which were improved versions of the K-class. Both were torpedoed by the S-class submarine HMS Salmon, as they provided cover for destroyers laying mines along approaches to the River Thames. She went on to become a training ship and once again took up an offensive role in Norway from November 1942 to April 1943 before taking up minelaying duties towards the end of WWII. Nu¨rnberg passed into the hands of the Soviet Union after the war's end, being renamed Admiral Makarov.
