Viking Jarl´s Broadsword
(OBVS)
This ‘oak-blade’ replica represents a sword known as a ‘Jarl’s Broadsword’. A Viking Jarl (Earl) was a very strong and important member of the warrior elite, answerable only to his king. He did more than sail a ‘Long-ship’ trading and raiding. At times of war and conquest, he commanded fleets of dozens of ‘Long-ships’ and sometimes thousands of Viking warriors. Great Viking trading cities grow up in conquered lands like Jorvik (York) in England and Dublinia (Dublin) in Ireland, and each was governed by its all powerful Jarl. A good Jarl was very rich and famous, giving many gifts to his best warriors. These were ‘Jarl Gifts’ usually golden rings and precious stones, but sometime a very special ‘Jarl’s Broadsword’ was given.
